Chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of the essential oil of Erigeron acris L. grown in Turkey

This study examined the chemical composition and in vitro antimicrobial activity of the essential oil extracted from the Erigeron acris L. plant, which is found naturally in Erzurum. The essential oil was obtained through hydrodistillation of the aerial parts of the plant. The components of the essential oil were identified using GC-MS. The major components identified were γ-curcumene (16.88%), isolongifolene (12.47%), and humulene epoxide II (12.45%). The antimicrobial activity of the essential oil was assessed using the agar disc diffusion method. The essential oil of E. acris demonstrated antimicrobial effects against most of the tested microorganisms. Among the species tested, Streptococcus pyogenes was found to be the most sensitive, while Listeria monocytogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli were the most resistant to the essential oil.
