ranslation and Technology: A Critical Look from English Major Students
İbrahim Şahin (Atatürk Üniversitesi)
The growing importance of technology in the educational environment as an evergreen issue has
also played a significant role in the field of translation. Nevertheless, the significance of translation
might refer to more than finding the equivalent expressions of one language or understanding such
expressions. On this basis, this study specifically focuses on how English major students perceive
the significance of translation, what considerations they regard while translating, how they benefit
from technology while translating, and what their recommendations are for the use of artificial
intelligence during translation. The sample consisted of a total of 43 Turkish students who are
studying American Language and Literature in a state university located in the eastern region of
Türkiye. Regarding the basic premises of the study, the students were asked to narrate their answers
in their first language (i.e., Turkish) in order to help them detail freely. Their handwritten narrations
were analyzed through content analysis. To increase the reliability of the coded analysis, sample
extracted statements were also included. The overall findings of this narrative inquiry provided
valuable implications for translation-based future research and the use of computer and artificial
intelligence technologies for translation, and the place of translation inside language-related
programs.
