Effect of Intercropping System on Yield, Plant Growth and Yield of Red Cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. rubra) and Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.)
Özet
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of intercropping system on yield and plant growth
in red cabbage and lettuce in Erzurum (Turkey) conditions. Red cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. rubra
cv. Mohrenkopf) was used as main crop and lettuce cultivars of Lactuca sativa L. var. longifolia cv.
yedikule, Lactuca sativa L. var. crispa cv. Güllü and Lactuca sativa L. var. capitata cv. Orlyez were as
intercrops in this study. Intercrops varieties were planted between red cabbage rows. According to findings
from the research, the yield of red cabbage increased 12% the intercropped with curly lettuce but decreased
in yedikule at %2 and iceberg lettuce (head) at 15%. The head diameter, head length, stem diameter and
stem length of red cabbage significantly increased where growing with curly lettuce. Dry matter of red
cabbage increased 0,73% with curly lettuce, but decreased 9,85% with yedikule lettuce. The TSS content
decreased with all intercropping systems. The content of vitamin C of red cabbage increased in iceberg
lettuce (5,59%) in the study. Generally, yield and plant growth of lettuce cultivars decreased with
intercropping systems but these reductions were not statistically significant. In conclusion, the best of plant
combination for red cabbage were determined as curly and yedikule lettuce in Erzurum conditions.
