Acetylcholinesterase and Butyrylcholinesterase Inhibitory Activities of the Capitulums of Helichrysum plicatum subsp. plicatum

Abstract <o:p></o:p>

Helichrysum

plicatum subsp. plicatum (Asteraceae)

is known as “ölmez çiçek, altın otu” in Turkey. The capitulums of the plant are

rich from flavonoids and have high antioxidant activity. Alzheimer's disease is a nervous system

disorder in which the brain's sensory functions deteriorate and symptoms such

as forgetfulness, non-speech can be seen. There was cholinergic loss in the

brain in Alzheimer's patients. It has been determined that the amount of acetylcholine

released from cholinergic junctions and synapses decreases. Thus, the treatment

of the disease has been tried by increasing the amount of acetylcholine by

inhibiting acetylcholinesterase enzyme which breaks down acetylcholine by

hydrolysis. In this study four different extracts were fractionated from Helichrysum plicatum subsp. plicatum (Asteraceae).

Acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory activities of n-hexane,

water, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate extract in 100 μg / mL were compared with

commercial Donepezil. While The value of acetylcholinesterase inhibition of the

ethyl acetate extract is %18±3, the other extracts have not significant

cholinesterase inhibition activity.<o:p></o:p>
